The Power Quality Investigator: An Overview EPRI members wanted a tool allowing them to access and internally deploy decades of EPRI research and expertise in identifying and mitigating industrial and commercial power quality issues. Enabled through EPRI’s Power Quality Program, EPRI’s PQ Investigator is specifically designed to meet the utility PQ engineer’s needs. Learn about this expert tool in this video. See the Video Join Now for 2021 Membership Proposal for a New Working Group in CIGRE CIGRE members should note that a new working group has been proposed to be created under the auspices of CIGRE C4. The new working group will aim to review existing PQ standards and practices from across the globe and compare and contrast them. Suggestions for “best practices” are also proposed to be reviewed by this working group. Please watch this space for more information. Download an overview document for this working group. 2013 Superbowl Power Outage On February 3rd, 2013, near the beginning of the third quarter of the NFL Super Bowl, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans experienced a thirty-minute power outage, which affected half of the stadium, including stadium lighting. EPRI engineers investigated the lighting aspect of the outage. The metal-halide lamps in the stadium require a cool-down period before restriking. This design characteristic may have been a factor in the duration of the outage of the stadium lights. Solutions include lamps with faster strike and re-strike, which may be achieved with foreseeable technology improvements. Another approach is to maintain the power to the lamps using "bridge" power, which provides temporary power to a stadium lighting system until backup generators activate and are brought online. This document explains how to use this service. Download Now In PQ News : NIST Publishes Document on Monitor Synchronization The Pioneering Work by François Martzloff of NIST Call of the Month for February 2021 Via EPRI’s PQ Knowledge (PQK) Power Quality Hotline, a PQK member asked a question about problems that a customer experienced with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that shared the same transformer secondary with a three-phase welder. The batteries supplying the UPS had to be replaced on multiple occasions. Apparently, the UPS was activating far more often than it should, draining the batteries.
